Tao of Detox

In Taoist Health we recognise that the body needs time of build-up and times of break-down. Just as the moon waxes and wanes, our body fluctuates between requiring tonification (strengthening) and detoxification (cleansing).

In the modern world we tend towards the extremes. Thus some people are permanently consuming heavy building foods; others are on a permanent diet. Taoist Nutrition looks more towards a flow between the two; a cycle of building and cleansing.

Not all cleansing is the same! There are various degrees of cleansing, and it is worth finding the right cleanse to suit your needs. We need to consider first how stable our heath and emotional state is: if we make too drastic and change, it can have the effect of throwing us off-balance. So if you are just beginning your detoxification journey, it may be wise to start slowly!

Types of Cleanse

Fasting:
this is the most drastic type of cleanse, and when done with guidance and support it can bring about extremely effective results. It is best combined with colonic therapy to eliminate wastes.

Fruit Cleanse:
Useful to remove heat, toxins and excess. However, should be avoided by those with Candida, blood sugar imbalances and weak digestive ability.

Raw Food Cleanse:
This is more balanced that the fruit-only cleanse. For many it is a preferable alternative to complete fasting. Foods are eaten raw, uncooked as as "live" as possible (enzyme-rich), and this has the effect of cleansing the body whilst providing nutrients.

Simple Foods Cleanse:
If one's aim is to detox a stressful life and busy mind, then a day or two of simple foods may be more suitable than other forms of cleansing. Foods such as brown rice and steamed vegetables may be taken, with no added sauces or flavourings. The energetically helps to draw one's chi back to the centre, slowing down a busy mind.

Low-Toxin Cleanse:
This simply involves cutting out toxins such as tea, coffee, alcohol and chocolate for a week or two. At the same time, one eats 100% organic whole foods. Although there are no other restrictions on food intake, just avoiding toxins can have a strong effect on health. This is a good option for those who cannot take time off from their busy schedules.
Detox-Relax

Detoxifying is not dependent only upon our diet (or fasting)....the other crucial factor is how relaxed we are.

When the body is stressed and adrenaline is running, our body blocks its ability to detoxify (it is preparing instead for an emergency).

It is therefore ESSENTIAL  for us to unwind as part of any detox program.Deep breathing a good way to let go, especially a long exhale or sigh. Nature is another key way to unwind, and thus many detox centres can be found in lush natural surroundings. Even if you are at home, try to find a tree or park near by to connect with.
